We had a very happy reunion at the club when Alex Chalk KC,  Cheltenham’s former MP and a great favourite of Club members, came to speak on “Being Lord Chancellor”. Alex is not only clever, hardworking, and exceptionally nice, but also very witty, and his description of much of his work was self-deprecatory and extremely amusing. We learned a lot about the history and role of the Lord Chancellor, but we laughed a lot too.  And of course, everyone was especially fascinated by his account of his role at the Coronation, and at the State opening of Parliament. We also remembered that heart-in-mouth moment when, in full regalia, he had to walk backwards down the steps from the monarch at the State Opening of Parliament.
