Special Interest Groups
Activities & events
Members of The New Club join to meet other like-minded individuals and make new friends as well as to meet up with existing ones, to take part in the lively, interesting, diverse and fun activities of the Club, to enjoy the varied social life of the Club, to learn new skills and practise existing ones, to delight in the exquisite and varied food and drink at the frequent suppers and lunches at the Club, and to benefit from more than 40 Reciprocal Clubs in the UK and throughout the world with which we have a relationship.
By day
Art
Members of the Art group meet weekly to draw and paint a variety of subjects and in a variety of styles. The group is open to all abilities, and the more experienced help and advise those just starting for the first time to pick up a pencil or charcoal or a paintbrush.
Art appreciation
The group meets half a dozen times a year to discuss the work of different artists, led by the group moderator.
Book club
The book group meets once a month in which each member chooses their book and a lively discussion takes place in which the book is then judged 1 – 10. At the end of the year the book given the highest score is judged “Book of the Year”. An intelligent and lively array of book readers thoroughly enjoy these sessions.
Bridge
The group meets once a week in the afternoon and plays for 2 hours, with anything from 4 to 8 tables, meeting convivially in the bar afterwards. Friendly tables play Chicago or rubber, and occasionally host competitions with members of the Cheltenham Bridge Club.
Choir
A large choir practises weekly to give two concerts a year culminating in a marvellous Carol concert for the members on our beautiful Regency staircase.
Chess
An opportunity for chess enthusiasts to meet up and connect, compete, and improve their game together.
Flower arranging
A group of artistic men and women meet once a week to arrange flowers for the club, both for the main rooms and tables. Ikebana is sometimes used as well.
Golf
A number of members play weekly at different courses, both friendly games and competitions.
Ladies lunches
These take place every three months, when ladies are invited to wear their best dresses and enjoy the company of new friends and taste delicious lunches with wines. Sometimes a guest speaker is invited.
Learning Italian
Weekly classes, starting with absolute beginners and moving on to more experienced speakers, together with practising speaking in Italian conversation groups.
Memoir writing
The members of the group write about 1000 words on topics selected by the group each month and read them aloud to each other before discussing them.
Music
A monthly group which meets to discuss music of all genres and periods.
Pilates
There are classes on two mornings a week, taught by experienced Pilates instructors and taking place in the club.
Racing table
We have exclusive use of our own table in the Cotswold Suite of Cheltenham Racecourse, with the best views from the grandstand of the whole course and horse ring. You will be lunching and watching the grandstand racing with all of the top owners, trainers and VIPs at the Cheltenham Festival.
Rambling
An active rambling group meets monthly exploring the Cotswolds culminating in a good pub lunch!
Scrabble
Members meet weekly in the coffee room for friendly games.
Snooker
Weekly games of snooker involve teaching beginners as well as playing friendly or competitive games. There is a ladies group as well as a mens, and everyone ends up in the bar for a light supper.
Visits
The club also organises day visits to cities and places of interest all around the UK, with all travel, food and activities planned. Whether it’s a day at the gallops or a backscenes visit to The Royal Opera House, there’s something for everyone.
By night
Club suppers
We have a weekly Club Supper, with up to 60 dining, mostly on tables for 6 or 7. The suppers are themed, with cuisine from all over the world, often accompanied by outside entertainment. Every month we have a French evening, with specialities from the different regions of France, accompanied by appropriate entertainment.
Lecture suppers
We have a monthly Lecture Supper, when an expert speaks on wide ranging topics (music, architecture, art, jewellery, silver, punting, Cheltenham Ladies College, exploration, archaeology, stained glass, novels and military history for example). These are followed by dinner with the speaker and then a Q and A session.
Quiz night
A monthly gathering of teams fills in the fiercest of questions for our Quiz Nights!
Special suppers
In addition, we have Special Suppers which include: appropriate menus and entertainment for St George’s Day and St Patrick’s Day; Chinese New Year; Christmas Dinner; Game Dinner with game from local estates; Cocktail Parties; Roaring Twenties; and many others.
Wine appreciation
The Wine Appreciation Group meets on an irregular basis in the library, to taste wines, listen to talks by experts, sometimes visit vineyards all ending with an excellent supper in the club.
